Learning Goals

The Pride Center supports the academic mission of Cal Poly by utilizing specific learning goals and outcomes in the design of its programs, events, resources, and advocacy efforts.

Academic Success

Community members will apply intellectual curiosity to everyday life by drawing connections between classroom learning and out-of-classroom experiences.

Students will:

  • Identify goals needed for their own academic success
  • Identify resources to assist in their own academic success
  • Acquire and articulate practical skills, tools, and knowledge through high-impact experiential learning and Learn By Doing opportunities

Community Engagement

Community members will establish healthy, mutually beneficial relationships with others while building community and work collaboratively to make improvements and solve problems for the purpose of social transformation

Students will:

  • Demonstrate the ability to build community through collaboration by establishing meaningful connections with other students, staff, faculty, and members of the greater San Luis Obispo community.
  • Acquire skills and opportunities to manage interpersonal / community -based conflict and injustice while balancing their individual needs with others in the community.
  • Recognize, respect, and celebrate the diversity of people, cultures, and/or histories at Cal Poly and in the San Luis Obispo community with particular attention to those of sexual and gender minorities and other underrepresented populations.

Diversity & Global Consciousness

Community members will affirm and value the worth of oneself, individuals, groups, and community by communicating effectively across social identity and other forms of interpersonal difference. Challenge unfair, unjust, and oppressive practices to improve life for all.

Students will:

  • Recognize their own culture, values, beliefs, privilege, and challenges in relation to others in the community and in the larger world, especially in regards to sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
  • Be able to identify and engage resources that promote access, equity, and inclusion
  • Engage in cross cultural communication across differences to promote solidarity, understanding, and one’s own role in creating inclusive communities

Holistic Wellness

Community members will care for the well-being of oneself and others while building the skills necessary to lead a quality and healthy life.

Students will:

  • Recognize the importance of personal investment in developing mind, body, and spirit
  • Know how to utilize resources that aid in the promotion of self-care and well-being, with particular attention to healthy personal habits, accessing basic needs, healthy sexualities and sexual practices, and improving mental health
  • Identify their role and/or develop advocacy skills to cultivate a healthy community

Identity Exploration

Community members make meaning and shape values and beliefs through conversations and activities that affirm the worth of individuals, groups, and communities. Learn to identify assumptions and compare/contrast them with newly gained experiences and knowledge.

Students will:

  • Examine and form their own personal values, beliefs, attitudes, understanding of needs, and expectations of relationships with other individuals, groups, and/or communities
  • Gain knowledge and articulate both historical and contemporary issues, events, and people who have attributed to LGBTQ+ liberation movements and queer culture
  • Recognize areas of personal strength and continued growth with particular attention to the roles of ally, advocate, and activist
